I do have two subs in my living/TV room, but for much different reasons than the application you have on your mind...

When we watch TV, the built-in amplifier in TV (2*8W) feeds 2 DIY 2-way speakers, plus an inexpensive active subwoofer comes alive. I or my wife don't have to fiddle with the AV system. (I or my wife can't stand the built-in speakers of the TV)

When we watch DVD, I turn off the TV sound, and my granddad sub becomes active.
