DVD Player suggestions. Help! $300-$500 range

My 4 year old JVC doesn't play certain DVD's due to format, so I need to buy another. Any recommendations in the $300 - $500 range? I hear a lot about the Panasonic XP 30 and XP50, and Denon. I don't know much about this stuff, and any help would be appreciated. The XP50 is about impossible to find. I don't watch a lot of DVD, but want something that will play DVD's that I create on my computer in the DVD-R format. I also have a high end sound system. Thanks for your help.
