Subwoofer preamp output Question

I am seriously interested in purchasing the ONKYO DR-C500 DVD Player/Receiver.
However, I will also be using it for two channel CD listening. I have a powered sub. Since this unit has a sub preamp output I want to run this into my powered sub. However, I have heard that if you are just listening to normal CDs in 2 channel direct mode, the subwoofer output will NOT be active. Is this true or will the receiver send the low frequency output to the subwoofer regardless of the setting?
