Re: Progressive scan question.

152.3.0.20

My understanding of progressive scan is it only works with direct tv or hdtv. I plan to buy a flat screen non- hdtv.

Just check the specs of whatever TV you're planning on buying to see if it is capable of progressive scan - it's enough of a tagline now that they do market it. Most monitors with component in now are capable of progressive scan.

What TV are you thinking of buying?

Do i need to look for dvd players w/o progressive scan? Is the picture better with progressive scan?

Generally the picture is better with progressive, but that also has something to do with opinion. Progressive scan looks more like film than TV in that it shows full frames at 29.97 frames/sec rather than splitting each frame into a pair of fields as is done in interlaced scan. That's why interlaced appears to flicker more.

If you're getting a non-progressive TV, I wouldn't bother with a progressive scan DVD player. Admittedly the price difference isn't as drastic as it used to be, but unless there are other features on the progressive DVD player, you won't be using any of the progressive scan circuitry.

Hope that helps... let us know if you need more elaboration.
