"Sub out " hook up

I am using the sub out connection from my A/V reciever to my sub. The reciever has selectable cross over points and I am using the 80hz setting. My question is, with the recivers cross over set, what should I do with the cross over setting on the sub? Is this set up using both cross overs and isn't this a bad ting? Should I set it up a different way? Also, the conection from the reciver uses one cable to the left input on the sub. Should I use a Y splitter and plug into both the right and left inputs on the sub?
