Region 0 DVD: okay?

Do you folks out there feel comfortable buying Region 0 DVD's from stable-looking sellers on EBay? I live in New York; I own a low-level Sony player, can I expect the disc to play, or, if it doesn't, will Sony help me out if I need to change something in a hidden menu? Is the Region 0 thing a no-brainer, or are there complications? Thanks.
