I cannot really answer your question but IMHO the TV is the weak link. A DVD player is designed to send a component video signal, the TV may not be designed to receive one in the first place. Like you, I have experienced better results with S-video rather than with Components. My DVD is a fairly recent Yamaha (1-year old), and my tv is 3-4 years old JVC 27inch. Based on my experience, your experience, and what I hear at hifi/video stores, component connection is beneficial only with large screen TVs (above 36inch) and HDTVs.
