The distortion in the letterbox bars is very likely due to poor adjustment of the picture's geometry. On most televisions the geometry adjustment is accessed only through the service menu, so I don't think you'd want to mess with this yourself .. and you'd void you warranty if you did.

Tell the dealer you want them to spring for a service tech visit to your home.

As far as the other distortion when using component cables... I have a similar problem myself when I use anything other than a co-ax connector. I've been told this is likely due to RF interference. Perhaps the cable is passing near a transformer in one of your home theater components. Or perhaps the cables pass near your in-wall electrical service line.
