Re: sony wega problem

( I tried to post this a few days ago, but it would not post )

The problem is more likely to be with your HD sat box. Is the output of the box set to 1080i or 720p ?? Which brand and model box do you have?? Some boxes will not simultaneously output both SD and HD. Some boxes if set to a HDMI or DVI ( digital ) output mode will not output the HD ( analog ) component video. When you press the "video" button ( input on most other brands ) on the Sony TV remote, you should see the TV change through all six inputs plus the one or two antenna inputs . The component inputs always work right out of the box ( 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i ) on Sony's, no need to turn anything on in the menu's. Sat boxes and DVD's are just the opposite, they may need some setup before getting the type of output you need for your components and many boxes assume the lowest common denominator!
I recollect that the early HD Sat boxes from Mitsubishi were very difficult to deal with because once you change the output from SD to HD, you seem to suddenly lose the picture, so you have to be simultaneously wired for HD so that you can change the TV to the component (HD) input to finish the setup.
It does seem a bit strange you having problem with a new Direct TV box , since most new models I have seen seem to be able to output both HD and SD at the same time so that people can watch HD and record to DVD or VCR ( picture quality can be startling good on a S-VHS machine that can capture up to 400 lines! ) at 480i
