DVD is still a fairly young technology. I remember even the first "high-end" CD players having similar problems. A DVD transport is very similar, mechanically, to a CD transport. Due to the much smaller tolerances needed, however, a small misalignment will cause big problems with a DVD player as opposed to a CD player. Reliability will improve over time, just as it has with CD players.
