Re: 7.1 versus 5.1

Although it isn’t explained in the link below, AFAIK, the extra 2 rear channels in a 7.1 system (or one channel in a 6.1 system), Dolby just extrapolates a rear center channel signal from the two side surround channels. An encoded flag tells your receiver or pre/pro, that the “EX” is present. Similar to how the front center channel was derived out of the front left and right channels in the old Dolby Pro-logic system.

Whether you need it depend on your room and surround speaker layout. My son has a 5.1 HSU-VT12/STF2 system, we ordered two extra speakers from HSU Research, because his HK receiver was 7.1 compatible. IMHO, although it sounds great, the extra two speakers don't make that much difference with DD-EX and PL 2x playback in his room. But all the speakers are mounted in a "direct output" set up (as opposite to diffuse dipoles), and his room is small and square.

I use high, side mounted bipoles for my surround, (soon to be upgraded to dipoles) and have often thought the addition of rear directly pointed monitors would help fill in the back sound stage. I do have it pre-wired, and may someday upgrade my front L/R speakers, and move the existing one to the rear (Paradigm Studio 20s on stands).
