Re: 7.1 versus 5.1 and MMGs

surround sound is supposed to do just that, surround you. adding 1 or 2 channels to the back increases that effect as mentioned. i'm lucky i guess as my panasonic sa-xr55 reciever already has 7.1 and my center channel speaker is collecting dust because my mains are 2 feet in front of my set. i should probably go get some extra cable for the rear today while i'm thinking about it.

i bought the panny precisely because i wanted to get fussy 4 ohm MMGs myself. my onkyo couldn't cut it, and high current amps tend to be expensive, especially when you're looking into multichannel.

i thought MMGs would be the perfect HT speakers because they're true dipoles. if you turn them sideways in your surrounds, then you'll have speakers that are harder to localize and will thus surround you more effectively. the front and back waves will cause cancellations. i was PLANNING on getting MMGs just for that purpose (along with awesome maggie speed and coherency)

dipoles and rear channels both try to do the same thing, surround you with a diffuse image that's hard to pinpoint except left to right. a "true" surround setup might be speakers mounted all over your walls, floor and cieling. it would be ugly as heck and expensive, but you would be surrounded.

hey... that would make a great thx/dts spot...
"come out with your hands up... you're surrounded!"
