How about a Sony?

Everything I've had from them was very dependable plus good picture, good sound. I wish when I bought my DVD recorder I would have sprung for the extra, as my Pioneer is inferior compared even to my ~10 year old Sony player for picture and sound. Our Panny DVD player is also better in both areas.
One thing to keep in mind is that if using DVD-RW's, is that once recorded if you want to play the disc on a different player the disc has to be finalized so it's a throw away after that ($/environmental).
