Question on Dolby Digital Signal Driving "Logic"

Hi,

I have noticed what seems like my (mostly) off-air HD programming audio (basic dialogue) mostly coming from the front mains on my system and not the center channel speaker. This seems to be getting more and more common. My understanding is that the Dolby Digital circuitry decodes and then "drives" or directs the various decoded signals to their appropriate speakers.

My system is 5.1 with Vandy 2Ci mains, a huge NHT AC-2 center channel, a Velodyne VX-10 sub (a cheapie, but still works very well), and Celestion 1 rears. The A/V is a 100wpc Onkyo TX-DS696. To avoid this very distracting situation I often switch to the analog stereo inputs and use ProLogic II. This works almost every time.

I guess my question is whether this programming (that is, off-air HD) intends to place dialog on the mains, or whether my Dolby decoding might be flawed. Any thoughts would be appreciated as I am still attempting to understand all of this "stuff."

PS BTW, I just bought an Oppo 980H. Although the video is not quite as good as my big DENON DVD-3800, it is very good but has none of the DENON’s quirks and the audio is great. A nice value for $169. I also bought their brand new HDMI switch box and can say that it works perfectly and does not degrade the video signal at all. A great way to add HDMI inputs, IMO.
