Blu ray and settings...

A friend brought his PS3 over and we hooked it up to my theater system. I have a 720p FP with an HDMI input. We couldn't get the signal to pass to the FP. It had to have been due to the PS3 needing to be set to the native resolution of my 720p FP....correct?? Question: if I buy a combo player (HD DVD/BluRay) will I need to set it to 720p initially? If so how can you do it without being able to see the menu on a monitor? Sounds like catch 22. Comments please.

Thank you.
