I have a Toshiba D-VR650 combination DVD Recorder/VCR in one of our spare bedrooms. It's quite nice. My only (minor) complaint is that channel-changing via the built-in tuner is a bit slow. Toshiba also offers DVD Recorders without the VCR section, and they can be had for well under your price ceiling.
