Mike/Computer instead of SPL Meter ???

I was thinking about getting an SPL meter to better set up my home theater. Then I thought of something. I have a tuner program on my PC that will do real-time spectrum analysis. I thought it might be cool to instead of getting an SPL meter, getting an omni-directional mike with, hopefully, a reasonably flat response and just plugging it into the soundcard on my PC (SoundBlaster Audology). Then I could use any of a number of free programs to both check levels and also frequency response and things like that.

Anyone ever do that? Is there a mike that you could recommend that's doesn't cost more than a $50 SPL meter?
