DVR questions...

Hi all,
I usually hang out in the tubes forum, but last week I became the owner of a free working Hughes (TIVO)SD-DVD40 recorder, so now I'm here.
My question is can I do anything with this unit and my current Verizon FIOS service such as recording off cable, air TV programs or movies from my computer to be played back on TV without service? I am NOT planning on getting a subscription to their service...so is this just a tear apart for usable parts?
Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.
