Pinging Joe Murphy: Differences between PS3 and BDP-S1

Hi Murphy

Not sure if you already have experiences with both these units, but would you be able to advise what are the (not so obvious) differences between the BDP-S1 and the PS3 when it comes strictly to Blu-ray playback picture and sound quality?

I have a couple of friends clamouring me to distil for them the construction and design differences between them so that they can decide quickly which to purchase as their first Blu-ray player.

Well, we hear reports that PS3 sound "better" than BDP-S1, which at this point is difficult to verify. We also know that one can only enjoy uncompressed LPCM sound from PS3 if one uses its HDMI output into an HDMI equipped AV receiver. But for many AV inclined audiophiles, downgrading to an AV receiver (albeit one with HDMI) is not sonically acceptable. The BDP-S1 ensures one can still enjoy LPCM sound even if one owns only pure analog amplifiers.

Would you be able to advise if there's any step-up in design and parts usage in the BDP-S1 that would make it perform better than the PS3? There should be right? Since the S1 is twice as much as the PS3 and made for far less functions. Does it use better chips, better power supply parts, better circuit topologies, better chassis rigidity, better reading mechanism, better...,etc My friends are "desperate" to know whether BDP-S1 is a better player for their analog based system.

Pointing us to a link for the information is also OK.

Your advice is much appreciated by a video newbie.
