The obvious answer is some difference in the setup.

Some TVs can store different settings for different inputs so the first question has to be are you using a different type of connection from your DVD player than was being used when you auditioned it? If you are using a different type of connection and your DVD player has a similar video out to what was being used with cable, try the same sort of connection as was used with the cable setup.

Some sources also allow you to change picture setting parameters like brightness, contrast, etc. Maybe the cable box had that facility and they had tweaked those settings on the cable box.

The simplest solution: get a DVD like Digital Video Essentials or even a film with the THX Optimiser test patterns on it, along with the proper blue filter, and adjust your picture settings on the TV to give you good results.
