Plasma settings question.

Got "GetGray" and have a few questions.
1. I had my Panny set on "vivid" and switched it to "standard" to do tests. Things looked a lot less brilliant and IMO less interesting. Is vivid the wrong way to go and should I just get used to standard? Will leaving it on vivid lessen the life of the screen?
2. On the "5% Step Gray Ramps" I never could get the white bars past the tick mark to blend into one. How do I fix this?
3. What test pattern do I use to adjust the sharpness setting?
I went to the AVS forum for some answers but the thread is 55 pages long now and most of it is beyond my understanding as a novice. Hoping I can get some quick answers here.
