I was in a very similar situation. I was/am getting Comcast's analog service without a box. I got a HDTV that has a digital tuner (QAM) in addition to the regular analog tuner. I've got the coaxal from cable going directly to my TV. I get aal of Comcast's analog channels, plus all of my local digital/HD channels at no extra charge. I beleive that cable is required to supply you with your local channels. My set also has a seperate input for an antennae, which I use, but since I'm in a vally, my reception is only "OK"-I don't get PBS well. When it does work, its a better picture than what cable gives me.
To do:
1)check the TVs you are looking at, to see if they have seperate inputs for cable and an antenna.
2)If not, you can get a switcher most likely.
3)If your new TV has a QAM tuner, let it do a scan to see if it will pick up your locals from cable.
4)If you do #3, you may pick up a few other channels as well. I get a dozen or so music channels, as well as an occational VOD channel-usually whatever what my neighbors are watching(which apparently is a fair amount of porn).
5) if 3 and 4 don't work, get an antenna.
