RE: Is HDMI input an important feature for an AV receiver?

Yes, because HDMI will allow lossless decoding of some of the newer audio outputs like TrueHD and HD Master Audio. If your disk player can decode these streams, you can use a receiver with any version of HDMI since they all support uncompressed video (for example, Accessories4less is selling refurbs of Marantz SR4001 for a bargain basement price, the aforementioned Yamaha 663 is also a good bet). If your players doesn't decode these streams, you will need a receiver with HDMI 1.3 input. The other advantage of HDMI 1.3 is support for deep color video but you will likely not need this as most TVs don't support deep color.
