Much depends on the audio quality of your DACs in the player and/or prepro.

Since I'm HDMI-challenged, it's a no-brainer, I have to rely on the player DACs (through multichannel analog preamp in lieu of pre/pro). And when/if I get an HDMI pre/pro, I'll have to evaluate it's audio processing, DAC performance, and especially the preamp stage performance.
