Provided the driver layout is vertically symmetrical it should work fine, quite possibly better than a speaker with the drivers in a horizontal array.

Instead of keeping the second speaker of the pair as a spare, you could use it for the 6th channel of a 6.1 setup if you have a 7.1 receiver and the room space.
