How much should he spend?

Depends how serious his movie jones is and how much time his family would spend in it. It's not something that I would invest tons in permanent installation unless I was going to live there awhile. (I'm a realtor.) Having a nice space for movies - a media room in family area or a basement frex - and being wired for video and sound, will pay off. Putting in an elaborate AV room in a modestly priced house may not. Higher end properties offer the best return on HT investments.

I'm not a huge fan of Sony receivers - I'd probably suggest Onkyo or Denon first for a HT. If he wants small lifestyle speakers there are much better than Bose to be had - Omniatstats and others. There are also plenty of affordable alternatives to Klipsch floorstanders. If your friends would ever listen to music in surround mode all the speakers need to be matched reasonably well - same speaker manufacturer is best. But if he goes to avsforum.com he'll find lots of info.
