CRT's use magnetic deflection to steer the electron beam, scanning the phosphor coated tube. A stray magnetic field from non-shielded loudspeakers can interfere with the TVâ€™s magnetic field. The stronger the loudspeakers magnet, the farther away it can cause problems (my Selenium WPU1505â€™s large magnet system caused havoc with my Sony Wega starting about 9 feet away!
Flat panel TVâ€™s, either LCD or plasma, do not use a magnetic field (the pixels are not â€˜scannedâ€™, but turned on and off electronically). With a flat panel, shielded loudspeakers are not necessary.
