Blu-Ray, letter boxing and zoom

Just got a BD player and Iron Man disc. This title is something like 2.25 to whatever aspect ratio. I have an older Sony 60" LCD RPTV. With 1080 in via component or HDMI/DVI the set does not allow zooming or wide zoom to get rid of letter boxing. Do newer displays allow zooming of letter boxed BD titles? 720 and 1080 from cable box does not do this and with DVD I am able to zoom. Very disappointed in BD at this point because of these cockamamy aspect ratios that these directors use to "stylize" their films. I thought it was a pile of crap when DVD first came out(and I think it is a pile of crap now with BD) and evidently so did a bunch of other folks since it became standard function with displays to be able to compensate for this retardation masqueraiding as artistic license.
