The rear projectors I viewed also had a great picture, but only from straight on. Off axis viewing started dimming at an alarming rate. Once you were 45 degrees from the axis, the TV just as well had been turned off. Dimming off axis is a huge problem for rear projectors. My Panasonic plasma has no dimming at all, even at extreme angles. Rear projectors first became popular because that was the only way to get a large picture. Now you can get a large image with other flat panel technologies, the bulk of a rear projector is no longer needed. I would not go back to a rear projector now. The new plasmas look very good, indeed. Better than LCD, in my opinion.
