Solution for HDMI/Optical Digital Decoder for 3.1 sound?

After years of putting it off I got a plasma screen and started the transtion to ditigal/HDMI... and I'm not interested in buying a 5/7.1 reciever but I am finding the audio from the TV is clear but weak and I really need that center channel to enhance dialogue!

Anyone have suggestions for the cheapest/smallest decoder just to get L/R and center (sub optional)? I am kinda desperate and any suggestions are welcome!
