Akira on Blu-Ray: Wow, what (hyper) sonics!

Even though TV's built-in speakers, wow, the Japanese TrueHD soundtrack sounds massive! The video is certainly fresher and crisper-looking than the VHS I used to own, but it's the audio which is the real star here, adding considerable depth to the movie, IMO (and I'm getting nowhere near the full experience)

Got to reading the booklet afterwards, and was mildly surprised that a good deal of it is all about this 192/24 audio, and how the soundtrack has audio content up into the 90 khz region, and in Japan, it seems they went so far as to install Pioneer super tweeters in the cinema!

The rationale is that, although we can't hear pure tones of such frequencies, many common sounds have considerable ultrasonic energy, and will sound most realistic if this ultrasonic content is left intact. And that, far from sounding brighter or more sterile, full-bandwidth sonics can be sweeter and more pleasing to the ear.

All of which makes me all the more eager to finally buy a good HT receiver which can really do this 192/24 audio justice. And rather than class-D amplification with it's low-pass filtering, I wonder if I should play around with good chip amps or even OTL tube power at some point! Interesting times.
