Basic bluray player & receiver questions

Hello
I am also considering a basic blu ray player and a receiver. Is 7.1 worth the extra $$ verus a 5.1? Should I stay in the pioneer line or should I consider something from panasonic or? I was also thinking about the 425 zvox speaker bar or some other speaker bar. I am unable to do a proper surround I do not want to send much on the receiver because this will not be my main music system.
