The age of their antenna is probably not the issue. It may be VHF only and I have not looked recently but the overwhelming majority of stations broadcasting digital were via UHF and a few were in the upper VHF area. Some may change after yesterday. I have to rescan mine. For that kind of distance you don't need anything elaborate. I am west of DC (about 25 miles) and many of the TV towers are north of DC. Baltimore is up the road. I have a 10 ft. VHF/UHF antenna in the attic I put in years ago and I pointed it in a manner with a preamp (signal amp) and an attenuator to get Baltimore and DC. One station (public TV) is in a slightly different direction and I put in (the attic as well which cuts down the range) a 4-bay Channel Master UHF bow-tie for that station (and an A/B switch downstairs) and it is not a problem. The antenna was about $21-22. If you mount something like that outside (and don't forget to properly ground it), it should be fine (and it is not large perhaps about 12x16 inches).
