I would say the ONLY reason to choose 720p in any size is price. It's just not a good resolution choice based on what's available "natively" from sources, both SD and HD. The only exception being 720p HDTV broadcasts, which is also a compromise made for price.

Here is some beginning info for the OP. There are some very technical articles here too. Maybe go to page 4 for the quick story. Executive Summary: there is no good technical reason to choose 720p for anything.
