Sometimes I really like a movie that leaves me feeling down.
The non-Hollywood ending that's either tragic or quietly leaves things unresloved (just like real life).Like Midnight Cowboy (why the hell isn't this on DVD!!!), The Last Picture Show, or Mean Streets.
Can you name some others?
Thanks,
Dan C

based on "The Brave Cowboy" by Edward Abbey. A near-great movie with a REALLY depressing ending!
![]()
... Not really depressing endings, but with a depressing theme thoughout. Their endings gave a glimmer of 'hope' for healing amidst uncertainty. Two films came to mind: Atom Egoyan's Exotica, and Monster's Ball.

A bummer marathon with great movies! Actually, I can't stand Titanic. But many of these are classics, I agree.

I guess you just can't be a sophisticated cineaste these days unless you very quickly proclaim that you hated "Titanic" if anyone brings it up in even the most oblique manner and even if no one asked for your opinion. But better still, to claim your credentials, say you weren't able to sit through the entire movie. Best yet, claim you never saw it in a theater, but were somehow "forced" to see parts of it much later on video. And of course if you're male, claim your girlfriend dragged you to see it completely against your will. And to REALLY solidify your status as a discerning film enthusiast, lament the fact that "L.A. Confidential" (Does anyone still remember that one?) didn't win the Best Picture Oscar instead.Hahaha. It's so laughably predictable. Not that I'm the biggest fan of Titanic (I DO like it though), but I find today's fashionable and seemingly universal backlash against the movie almost as humorous as its original hyper-popularity.

that it didn't know what to be, so it ended up being crappy.
I am a very tough customer of films. Here is a list of films I actually walked out of, in order of "suckiness":1) new Planet of the Apes
2) Pretty Women
3) The End of the Affair
4) 8mm
5) BlowI did not finish watching Titanic, but most of my friends loved it, and go on and on about it--and that hideous song! Yuck.
I think KP an I are the only ones who didn't even finish Titanic--really, I walked away after watching it for a half hour, and KP put up with it for about hour and a half.Titanic:
Here is a sappy love story for the girls-
cut to special effects, something for the boys
now back to the love story quick,
back to something for the boys-
cut to non gender specific special effects
etc, etc, etcTitanic had nothing on the classic Das Boot NOTHING!
I even enjoyed the Perfect storm, and here is one, remember the Poseidon Adventure? Great movie!Story: I'm in my living room crying over a perfect storm. I say to myself "get a grip, it's just a movie!" I tell KP--look at me I'm crying over a silly movie--KP says it really happened--WHAT!
You learn new things everyday.

Yeah, but a damn great film! Irons deserved two Oscars for his performances. And the film is even better when one realizes it overcomes the terrible performance---darn, forgot the name---of the French (perhaps French Canadian) actress.

Damaged:
This is about a father who destroys his life and the lives of his family due to his inabilty to withold gratifying his indecent sexual desires. The father has an affair with his son's girlfriend. The son finds out, and then a devestating event occurs--I won't give the ending away. The Claus Von Bulow story:
This is about a society mans alleged participation in causing his wife's coma. Also staring Glen Close
Juliet Binoche gave an intense performance in Damage. Another Louise Malle classic.BTW the one with Glen Close has another title I believe, it's where Jeremy slowly poisoned Glen (his wife) to death and gets away with it...
and a plot that starts out warm, but works to a sizzle.
This would be a great film for beginning film studies classes, like senior high school maybe. It's not too complicated, and lots to talk about. When you say the actress (Bujold) wasn't too good, I'd say she suited the film perfectly. The film presentation (color, etc.) is icy and stark, the main actors' (both of them) performances were detached and cold, their actions stilted and robotic, not like real people almost. They didn't act or talk like normal people. Short, clipped speech. Absolutely no personality, it's like their "real-life" emotions were all acting. Notice how little makeup was used on the actors, except to show injuries of course. I think Bujold only had "makeup" in one scene, unusual for female actors; she was presented starkly, and well, what can you say about Irons. And yeah, he was great. And then there's all the technical stuff you could talk about, very cleverly done and advanced for the time. Even the subject matter of the brothers' profession made many uncomfortable. I think the movie was too depressing for most people, I mean I just couldn't see making this movie part of an enjoyable evening out. There's not even anything goofy or unintentionally funny to laugh at.

awesome flick, reminds you of a bad dream, where you're trying your hardest to catch up to something, but to no avail. The ending could also be viewed as happy, because the main characters got so much out of their short existence together.

The Grifters, w/John Cusack, Angelica Houston, Anette Benning. Directed by Stephen Frears. Produced by Martin Scorsese. Something of a shock ending too.I dunno that "depressing" is the word I would use to describe the endings of the films we're discussing. Not standard happy endings fersher, but appropriate to the material. Gritty. Sad. Shocking. Whatever. I don't find any of that "depressing" per se.
> > I don't find any of that "depressing" per se. < <True. I just listed Seven because that's how I think most audiences saw it. However, I left the movie feeling elated that the director had resisted a happy Hollywood ending.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Would today's Disney Studio make it? Unlikely. There was a thread at another movie forum about "Who else besides me dislikes Disney movies". AMong people who hate, Disney, Old Yeller frequently came up as the exception.

Nope...just the black humor in the morning thing. I'm actually terrifically fond of critters and have had a yeller dawg (yellow labrador) underfoot for most of my life.I think I cried more for Bambi's mother. Bigger shock. Didn't see it coming. I had a feeling Old Yeller was a goner.

That's my first sad movie--about twelve when it came out in the theater. I was embarassed to cry in front of my family over a movie.
Extensive physcological therapy has corrected most of the problems stemming from that traumatic event.
KP and I have a More black lab than dalmation mix. Her name is Lucy, she is just adorable. She sleeps curled up in my arms, with her head on my neck. Extremely affectionate breed, labs are. I've always had boxers prior, but this one found me. She was a stray puppy that kept nipping at my pants cuff--so I had to take her home.mp
My childhood riding instructor had one who was wonderful ("Hilda"). Labs make good bass traps btw, much better than kitties (more mass).

It was the one I had immediately in mind when I started reading the thread. The whole movie is depressing, the protagonist seems doomed from the beginning, never mind just the end, which just confirms your first suspicions were correct.
"it's only a state of mine"Yes, he's body is tortured, but his mind is not there. His mind is happy, soaring.
The Parallax View (1974) with Warren Beatty is depressing because the hero gets killed at the end - just when you think he will uncover the secret.

you seem to know when all the dvd's come out?
Hey Mrs. Piggy,Actually, I'm just a movie nut that happens to have rented both Midnight Cowbow (one of my favorites - I actually wrote a paper in college called "Failure of the Western Myth in Midnight Cowboy") and Brain Candy.
Allmovie.com is a great movie resource. (and don't forget allmusic.com for music!) You can look up whether a movie has been released on DVD. If you go to the main screen and scroll down, you can click on the New Releases button to see all of the new DVD releases scheduled for the next few months.
Enjoy.

THANK you thank you THANKS!
Great link too.
I first saw Midnight Cowboy after I was fired from a lousy job. I felt depressed, was smoking at the time, and would watch it over and over. It really spoke to me at the time. I still love it, and it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

The guy grew a lot by the end of the movie. He had so much more perspective on life and what it means to be a human being, not just a clock-watching work-aholic. It even ended with him at a crossroads, a metaphor showing that his life and future is wide open. Yeah, he didn't get Helen Hunt, but he had that woman he delivered the package to in Texas at his fingertips if he wanted her. Life moves on. Very realistic.I LOVED the ending of this movie, but I guess most people were too dense to get it.

Completely unHollywood. This film is about as far away from Hollywood as one can get.
It's filmed entirely in black and white, beautiful crisp, clear images
that are highly artistic. The crispness of the film adds to the surreal--yet ultra real quality of the movie. It's how the world looks when you stay up all night (partying or otherwise) and walk into the early morning. Everything is detailed and enhanced, where your eyes see more than your mind does. The film catalogs one "normal" man's final journey in life. His final walk comes at a time when he decides to accept a departure from his routine existence and try to connect with the unusual circumstance life has placed him in.
This movie is an artistic experience.
I promise you, this one will stay with you for a long time.
It also exemplifies one of the most difficult concepts a person must face, the fact that life owes us nothing--it is a gift,
This is one of the most orginal films we've ever seen. Highly recommend, a real sleeper flick.
