Just saw a TV news item on this insidious DVD censoring software that allows you to sanitise DVDs when played back through your PC for "safe" family viewing.Imagine the Omaha beach landing without the gore.
The Matrix with bullet holes being replaced by cartoon captions.
Kate Winslet suddenly wearing a corset while posing for the drawing in Titanic.
The swords in The Princess Bride replaced with light sabers ???
As expected the Director's Guild is strongly against this tampering. If anything this sort of coverup sends exactly the wrong sort of message to impressionable kids.
With luck this silliness wil die a death like DIVX.
Follow Ups:
because a movie is an artistic expression and shouldn't be altered.
But if they have the directors permission, and it would make their idea reach an audience it normally couldn't, then OK. As a teacher, there are oodles of films I would love to discuss with my students and I can't because of one or two bad words or one or two scenes. To solve that problem, I just do my own editing, what's the difference?I find people in the United States to be completely preocupied with sexuality and nudity, and to a much lesser degree, bloodshed and gore. This is evidenced by the fact that you can see nine year olds playing mortal combat and even seeing the movie, but worlds collide if they may happen upon a woman breasfeeding. You don't see any kid's video games with naked people in them do you?
Because of said preocipations in our culture it is nessessary to have "elective" censorship, and these techniques at our disposal actually help to preserve or Freedom of Expression. For example, can you imagine what would happen to our cable channels if they didn't have parental control devices on the cable boxes?--I shudder to think!
At any rate, these elective procedures help to diffuse the argument that our freedoms must be be eliminated or curtailed in order to protect the children. In turn helping children grow up in a free society.mp
I hope you aren't under the impression that the Artists have any misgivings about all of this.Really...When was the last time, anyone has heard a film director "upset", publically, about this type of alternation...or any type of "reforming" of their film(s), say for Tv, or any type of viewing media ?
I was thinking about this as I was watching a film on AMC recently, and noticing the nasally, shrill voices, of a bad time compression transfer. This is a fact of viewing life, especially when watching this recycled garbage that's broadcast on TBS/TNT...continuously, sometimes three times, in consecutive broadcasts of the same film!!!
They want to make The Deal, period.
What it comes down to, is when it's them "selling out", you hardly hear a discouraging word...and it's not selling out, but making The Deal.
It makes me wonder, why Fans should be so concerned then, about things like these ? I'm sure these filmmakers are getting a good laugh...in their Rangerover...to the bank.

true, there are a lot of "sell-out" artists, but there are also a lot with a real unique vision. I agree with the priniple, but not the practicality. Like a say in the end of my post, I think these devices will be more helpful than harmful.
If one is making the choice to use it, what's wrong here ?
Choice is good, although I'd argue you either watch the film the way the director intended, or you don't watch it at all.For butcher shops with no respect or integrity like Disney/Miramax/etc. however, choice is good.
