...in 1973, that The Godfather won the Academy Award for best picture of 1972 and Liza Minelli won best actress for Cabaret. This year we had... Chicago.
Follow Ups:
It's not a great movie but it's a good one and certainly far better than the dreadful "Moulin Rouge." (The one with Nicole Kidman AND not the John Huston directed classic with Jose Ferrer.)Katherine Zeta-Jones is surprisingly good. Still, I think Bebe Neuirth (sp?) should have gotten the movie role. She was fabulous on Broadway and certainly has the looks and the vocal and dance talents to carry it off.
And KZJ is a better singer than Nicole Kidman, although I must admit that I don't think Nicole was the problem with "Moulin Rouge."
...last year's Oscars were much, MUCH worse. Chicago is about as deep as a coat of new paint, and just as shiny. But I'll take it over that bogus piece of mediocrity A Beautiful Mind...any day.Thirty years on, the Coppola film I watch most is The Converation.
