[This, from a buddy.]Wonderful job of film making fashioning a cinematic work with the stylistic elements of lots of great makers new and old. Music was great, very 6o's French. Animation sequence was effective, a homage to Run Lola Run and others of its type. Orson Welles camera angles abounded.Narration was used. Hell, it had everything including the blood stained kitchen sink (yes , the violence). I don't know what the fascination is with the samurai sword fighting but it sure was indulged in this flick and a Tom Cruise effort soon to follow. Lots of post limb loss arterial blood flow was on display. The surfeit of it had me bored and not watching during the Matrix parody. More than anything else that I've seen this picture clearly shows the influence of porn, sadism, video games and big screen animation on the traditional medium. I think less about this movie than I do about where it will lead. It's revolutionary in its own imitative way.I'm reallly curious to see how it does. If it's a hit, blood could be the next big thing.
Follow Ups:
I saw none of either. Where is the world does that comment come from? Video games- sure, vicious - yes, violent - absolutely.
Music is Emotion

at least the girls dancing on the bar seem to be...I guess if you look hard enough, you can find an influence. I think maybe he's talking about GoGo's schoolgirl outfit or something like that.

Here's my favorite critic's take on the movie.......................................................................................................
Besides a curator and a connoisseur, Tarantino is a pillager and a plagiarist.

Kill Bill, Vol. 1
Quentin Tarantino, with a lot of encouragement from critics and fans, appears to be convinced of his own great significance. I remain unpersuaded.

...here's an astute letter from a buddy who had just read it himself.clark

Thanks .I read the review. He writes well and sensibly.Still, there's more to Tarantino's flick then he would have a reader believe.First, I hate the word hommage .How do you differentiate it from plagiarism?Pilfery? Can a Brit say" I didn't commit adultery with your wife.I was merely making a hommage to your marital bliss!"Tarentino takes from everyone with gusto to create interesting, rapid fire see/hear effects. He is more an art director for a photo shoot than a serious film maker. We are dazzled by images and tunes past and present, the form, while horrified by the violence , the content. No Clint Eastwood is here to provide moral gravity to the carnage. It is meant to be kewl and only kewl as you say. This is the tragedy of his work: there is no philosophical intricacy to the characters or the story. Here Duncan is correct.Even when he isn't using animation, it is still a cartoon, a videogame.Maybe that's why he is keeping score in the credits.Movies are changing as they did in France in the sixties.Somebody will use all this new stuff to great effect soon. It's an exciting time in film.
