Did you buy it? Is it on a DVD? I need to try the later release DVD's, as the one I have sucks - the image quality is substandard most of the time, reducing the effect. I was told the later releases were better, so probably will just buy one.But I still feel it must be viewed on a large screen.

Rented it. Tower Records rents for 3 days and only $2.
It's a 1999 release.

...I didn't imagine it would end like that.And the film, it's not a gem. It is pretty much a masterpiece.
I have loved Barry Lyndon since it came out in 1974 and have watched it on laserdisc and, now, DVD. But I also love the late Pauline Kael's description of it as "The first coffee table movie".
