last night. Enjoyed the beginning of the film before it turned into a soap opera/love quadrangle. It's frightening to think an entire society can tear at itself so viciously. The film exploits that theme in such a way that it is hard for a freedom-minded person to accept that it was ever that bad. I find merit in the film in that it clearly illustrates (somewhat melodramtically) the plight of Russians in a very dark era.

I recognize melodrama but do you think it was too dark to be realistic. (Disreguarding the "quadrangle".)

Too dark? I don't think so. Using the video term, the reality was blacker than black. I see it in the same category as Dr. Zivago - some bits of reality put in the artificial gold setting. But I have to admit it - getting the feel for Russian history from these films is much better than not getting it at all.
Although I would really dream of someone like you getting and digging films like the "Heart of the Dog" - that one is like an encyclopedia of the post-revolutionary period, and incredibly well done... based on the Bulgakov's tremendous novel. Top-notch acting and witty text.
One of those films we never get tired of, and providing rich material for quotes, jokes and proverbs.
