I held my breath till the very end.
It had more intensity in it than most all recent war films put together.
Thank god for no annoying "intensity music" and no buttock-numbing monologues.

Follow Ups:
But then I *hate* bad post-pro dialogue insertion.
I have always loved this film, especially the way everyone in it is
corruptible. The girl singing at the end is a deft touch and very moving (Kubrick later married her). And one of the condemmed men, Joe Turkel, plays the bartender in "The Shining". Kubrick'e work here is the reason why producer/star Douglas later hired him on a weekend's notice when he fired Anthony Mann on the set of "Spartacus".

The girl was a nice touch. As you may have noticed she was the only female role in the whole film.
Sort of like the future mother figure - she will make more babies for the next war.
The humanity of the song and the awe in the eyes of the soldiers is just a glimpse, because right outside that door colonel receives the order to go back to the front line. His last smile is the smile of certain death..
I think AuPh has finally cracked a passable joke.Savor the moment.

He must've copied it from some book.

I am very glad you liked it - it is one of Kubrick's two best films, I think. They forgot the art of impressing with simple means.
I don't remember if you have seen the Forbidden Games? Another incredibly strong anti-war film, with no idiotic "intensifiers"-a-la-LOTR, just human emotions and sufferings... unbelievably poignant in its simplicity.

FG -What's it about? The other good anti-war film [it sounds almost stupid, but there are pro-war films, so we'll let it stand] was with Giancarlo Gianini when he mounts that fat nazi in a prisoner camp.
