Prompted by that post about Hollywood going downhill. Why do we need remakes of the old films? I see where Spielberg and Cruise are into redoing War of the Worlds. Ok, that was not the greatest, but do we need another one?And even stuff from TV shows, Starsky and Hutch?
What is it about America that discourages anything new in screenplays? Could Hollywood's days be numbered? With the web, DVD production, independents etc., I think so.

Follow Ups:
I also see that the fourth episode of Indiana Jones is "stalled". I wonder if that and the planned "War of the Worlds" effort have anything to do with each other.

The public's appetite for cheap entertainment and cheap food is insatiable, so Hollywood, that is the prime purveyor of that fare, is assured long life.Hollywood's existance is not tied to taking chances, breaking new grounds - it is all about safe way of making the public happy, and raking in tons of money.
Remakes are usually considered a safe way of making a successful movie. While this is generally speaking wrong, this notion still lives in LA. For a studio exec there is far less risk of being canned this way.

the list is endless. Why not remake Hitchkock? Or, Beh Hur, Spartacus, Barry Lyndon, Birth of a Nation?
Hollyweed sees low production costs and quick turnaround in bullshit.
