I have just rented on DVD the movie DAS BOOT. ( WWII) german submarine movie.
All I can say is WOW!!!!What a movie.
Can anyone suggest any other movies like this or related to this one?
Also can anyone suggest really good WWII movies? Not the hollwood type as in.... rah rah america all the way and damn the japs etc etc, but a GOOD thought provoking movies?
Follow Ups:
Check out:
Dark Blue World - about Czech pilots flying for the RACF, great air combat sequences.
When Trumpets Fade - A bit melodramatic, but captures the hopelessness and futility of the GI's caught in the battle of the Hurtgen Forest - green replacements thrown directly into pointless assaults against the same objectives over and over.
On a Midnight Clear - Battle of the Bulge drama.

War is different for everyone, so are the war movies. Being Russian, I am used to Russian and German ways of looking at WW2, so I would have hard time recommending many movies. Besides, most of the movies I like were never translated into English. Of the ones that were, I would highly recommend "Come and See".
I've seen quite few amazingly good German movies about the war, but most of them (for reasons beyond my understanding) were never translated into English, either.
Oh and another one I really like, though not exactly a war movie - "Quiller's memorandum", though the book is MUCH better.
But if you knew Russian, I would be able to suggest quite few really good movies...

If you mean submarine movies, I can't help ya. I think sub movies are the most predictable of genres. Das Boot being the best of the lot.If you're looking for other WWII movies, here's 3 of my favorites:
Soldier of Orange. Mainly about the Dutch resistance and how a group of friends becomes divided over the war. Not a lot of action, but thought provoking. Early Paul Verhoven and Rutger Hauer.
Band of Brothers. This DVD box set is a bit long, but it has the overall feel of grit and futility that the best parts of Saving Private Ryan had. The look and feel is almost identical. BOB is better than SPR because it's less sappy and corny. It has a much wider scope and plays with more of a matter of fact documantary feel.
Enemy at the Gate. Brutal and riveting story of the battle of Stalingrad. It is a war movie from the Saving Private Ryan school of war movies. The story is about 2 snipers hunting each other amid the biggest urban battlefield in history. Inexpliccably marred by a love triangle subplot, the movie is still quite good.

> > The story is about 2 snipers hunting each other amid the biggest urban battlefield in history. Inexpliccably marred by a love triangle subplot, the movie is still quite good. < <It's based on the book of the same name and the novel "War Of The Rats". Both seem to have gotten the story of Vasily Zaitsev, his duel with the German, and the love story with the girl from Zaitsev's autobiography. More contemporary scholarship has pretty much debunked the whole story as a colorful bit of propaganda but without any basis in fact.

The History Channel ran a show as U-571 was released that featured both a U.S. submariner and former U-Boat commander. They both agreed that depth charge attacks have been horrendously overplayed in all movies. The intensity of the shocks were nowhere near what the movies portray unless it is a direct hit. Thought that interesting. Any depth charge experience out there with comments?

Robert Mitchum's destroyer has locked onto Curt Juergens' UBoat and drama ensue's between above and below. Theodore Bikel is Juergen's first officer--interesting movie. Forerunner of Das Boot but has no hardware accuracy whatsoever. The UBoat crew had Hilton accomodations compared to Procknow's crew.

All are Hollywood productions but they're good:
· Saving Private Ryan – first 20 minutes or so depicts very accurately the hell of war, after that sort of regular.
· Patton – even though mostly about the man the movie highlights beautifully the politics of war on both sides.
· Tora! Tora! Tora! – warning, warning very Hollywood but an accurate depiction of the events leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor
· Memphis Belle – a bit sappy but I like it
· The Tuskegee Airmen – nobody’s getting any Academy Awards for acting in this one but it accurately shows one of the highs and at the same time one of the all time lows of American history.
· Hiroshima – IMO one of the best movies (maybe the best) about the events leading to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

"The Thin Red Line"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"Patton"
"Sahara"
"A Walk in the Sun"
"Battleground"
Also, the "Band of Brothers DVD boxed set.

I second "The Thin Red Line."Terrence Malik doesn't make films very often--a gross understatement, and the cast of The Thin Red Line is superb: Jim Caviezel (BEFORE he became a big star), John Cusack, Sean Penn, Nick Noltke.
I like it more than Saving Private Ryan . . . don't misunderstand me, there is some great combat in SPR, but the whole story line (risking a squad of soldiers to save one, just because his two brothers have died) is implausible.
The Thin Red Line--IMO--is a contemplative anti-war movie. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is one of my favorites.
Just an opinion, as usual.
But I would suggest the Tin Drum - I am sure you will get more wow's. And if you want a *different* type of a war movie, try Forbidden Games - extremely powerful with no explosions. If you want another realistic WWII German film, there is that unknown gem The Adventures of Werner Holt - a great big film, but might be hard to find.
The Cranes are Flying is a strong film "from the other side" - a Russian film more aking to Games than Das Boot.
All of these are about as non-Hollywood as you will find.
