I enjoyed reading the posts regarding best remakes and films that improved on the book.Anybody have any truly bad remakes or hack jobs made from great novels?
My remakes are mostly from classic film noirs:
Out of the Past...Against all Odds
Criss Cross...The Underneath
High Sierra...I Died a Thousand Times
The Killers...The Killers (w/Ronald Reagan)
Detour........Detour (w/Tom Neal JUNIOR)
The Getaway...The Getaway
The Postman Always Rings Twice...Sorry, Jack! The worst film from any "major" novel imo...Pet Cemetary, again from Stevie King...not a great book, but a truly bad film.
I'm not sure which was the worst...the novel or film version of Valley of the Dolls.
Any other choices?
Thanks,
Follow Ups:
But V I Warshawski with Kathleen Turner was purely awful.

Eyes Wide Shut is so much worse than the novel it is based on that I refuse to believe Kubrik actually shot it! I think he died before filming and they shot it themselves (Tommy and Nicole) and now claim it was his doing...

The BBC did an adaptation of Mervyn Peak's wonderful Gormenghast books. My understanding is that it was quite poorly done, but I have not seen it. Has anyone else seen the BBC version, which is now out on DVD? I'd like to hear your impressions.

Just thought of a recent hack job of a pretty good mystery novel...Blood Work. Michael Connelly's book featured a great premise and intricate plot...all served up in a very clean and tight prose style (imo).
Clint Eastwood's film was only a so-so rendering of the book, mainly because Clint cast himself as the hero. Clint, I love your work, but you just gotta stop playing guys half your age! You're 72...ya still look good, big guy, but you can't do 45 anymore.
On the other hand, Clint's directon of Mystic River was pretty impecable and impressive.
Regards,
Brilliant effort. Justly hailed as one of John Huston's best. But the novel exists in a completely different universe. For anyone who understands Melville's masterpiece, this is painful, impossible to watch, even embarassing.

I have read "Moby Dick" four times. I have seen the Huston film many more times than that. I think it a fine attempt. I also like the TV mini series with Patrick Stewart, which had a different approach. Film is a different medium than literature.

Bad remakes.....so many to choose from. Hard to beat King Kong. Oh Planet of the Apes was really bad. Solaris. The Inlaws. I just hate the idea of remakes in general.
