Bertrand Blier is the director, he is the son of Bernard Blier who was a star in France, an actor on the placid side, not very good, but had his time and charm.
This movie I would have to like with still yound Depardieu before he chase the big buck, Carole Bouquet ( his real life woman, that he left for a former lovers of Truffaut recently ( Fanny Ardant ) the most beautiful actress.
The text is pretentious, facetious and boring. The story is confused and the cuting may have help but not enough to put a real meaning where there are none. The music, central actor is over abused, and it can not hide all this picture is missing, that is nothing.
The only light is the very nice playing of Mrs. Josiane Balasko, and a light touch of a French way who has may dazzled my friend Victor.
Beside, I remember Blier as an inflatued person and his films not worse too look at.
I will not give him no more of my time, in the future.

No kidding, Patrick, G. Depardieu left his long-time lady for the foxy Fanny? Wow! I posted a week or so back about female actors with the "X factor," and Fanny was high on my list.I also watched the film 8 Women for a more recent look at Fanny...you were right, a BAD FILM, but some beautiful women.
The film that made me aware of Fanny was Confidentially Yours (Vivement Dimanche!, 1982)... the last film directed by Truffaut (wasn't she Francois' lady at this point?). A fine actress imo, and a very attractive lady.
Do you have any recommendations on other films staring Ms. Ardant?

You are now forced to look at " Ridicule " but do that twice!
And you will let us know what your opinion is.....
Fanny was good but the leading man goes strongly on my nerves ( he plays always the same way ) At first I was delighted by this film...But the second and the third aborded attempt learn me that it was just dust in the wind, or in your face....

No kidding! They made a film together, et voila, Monsieur Depardieu was gone....Maybe like Jack with Diane...The women, That I never complain on 8 Women...
Yes she was Truffaut woman, but he womanised all of his leading ladies...
" La Femme d´à côté " also from Truffaut, " Elisabeth " was ok, Callas for ever must be terrible ( said a friend in eyes I trust ) " Ridicule " one view is ok, after the second the film falls a part...The best are just this with Francois, I suppose... as I did not see in all of her roles....

Victor and Patrick!I'm not big on period costume dramas-I checked out Ridicule at IMDB...but I will try to find it with these strong recommendations!
Fanny was born in 1948, which means she is well into her fifties, and perhaps past the point where she gets leading lady roles (imdb shows her to be 4-5th billed in recent films).
Looks like I'll have to check out those earlier films directeed by FT.

Actually it is not a " big " drama. This film show a period at the court of the French king who was excessive in its own way, but entirely true. Funny and " ridicule", it can sparkle of wit. If you don´t of this time you should have a peak at it. It will be your gain!
As for 1948, I can assure you that it is the best vintage.

You didn't like Gerard? I thought he was touching. Of course we saw it years ago, but my memory of the film is warm fuzzy, nothing objectionable.
Gerard was good, a little bit on the effeminate side, with his voice, like in " La Chevre " or was it another film?
