Year of Living Dangerously.Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. My fave version is Sena Jurinac in an EMI re-issue.
Follow Ups:
I'm usually not a big fan of soundtracks - but Peter Gabriel did a great job.

I agree. The soundtrack MADE this film the masterpiece that it is, especially given the budgetary constraints. I will never forget seeing this and leaving the theater to witness a crowd outside of protesters, a curious almalgam of devout Roman Catholics, Jews, and fundamentalist Christians, none of whom had seen the film.

This.... movie had some pretty creative music. Komeda, Bis and Cornelius for starters.
Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" and all that great Bhangra music.

I was introduced to Tchaikovsky's Orchestral Suites Nos 1 and 2 in THE MUSIC LOVERS. The Scherzo Burlesque (sometimes called Scherzo Humoristique) from No. 2 is used during the opening sequence, complete with the original accordion part, and the Marche Miniature from No. 1 is heard later on, at a pivotal moment in the story. My CD is by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland conducted by Stefan Sanderling on Naxos, which I can certainly recommend. (In my opinion, it's also a great film.)Nyman's soundtracks from DRAUGHTMANS'S CONTRACT, A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS and THE COOK, THE THEIF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER. I haven't been very impressed with what little of his non-film music I've heard so far (eg Time Will Pronouce)... any recommendations would be welcome
My first impetus to explore THE MAGIC FLUTE came as a result of seeing AMADEUS when it came out.
My first exposure to Ligeti was 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY; I have since picked up a vinyl recording on DGG's Collector Series that includes "Lux Aeterna". I also loved the way Kubrick used Bartok in THE SHINING, though I find a lot of Bartok's music difficult to appreciate as absolute music (I *love* BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE and really wish BB had written more operas!)

Famous for a naked sex scene, the music played hauntingly while they were at it -- except for the, uh, climax the camera withdrew to a shot of a phonograph with the record spinning and the arm hanging in there, bobbing a little, and the label was readable.Very sexy don't you think?
I rushed right out and bought the set. That was, oh, 1963... Had never heard Brahms' chamber music before.
