In my policy of buying a movie I never heard of while buying movies I have seen or I am familiar with and want, I came across a movie called The Bicycle Thief. Filmed in post war Italy in 1948 it is a style of filmmaking called Neorealism. It's about this man who finally gets a job and needs to have a bicycle. He and his wife figure a way to get his out of hock and it's stolen on his first day at work. He tries to find the person who stole it and in the end he tries to steal a bicycle and gets caught but he is let go and that's how the movie ends. It's a sad story and I think many here would enjoy this movie. It may be hard to find, I got mine on laserdisc.

That's an admirable policy and this time you stumbled onto one of the all time great ones.

It IS one of the best films ever made, and if you dig deeper into that period in general, and De Sica's art in particular, you will find more gems.It is, BTW, available both on tape and DVD.

Yes, but then he will dissolve in tears when he hears the word, "Flic!""The Bicycle Thief" is sad...but "Umberto D" is unbelievably devastating.
de Sica is an incredible director. Orson Welles once said something along the lines of, "What I can do in films I believe no one else can do. But I ran 'The Bicycle Thief' again recently and was amazed. The camera just disappeared and there were no actors, no script...it was just life up there on the screen..."

effort and one that underlines what a curious profession acting is, i.e. the "performances" of the father and boy have seldom been equalled by professionals. Imagine a non-musician picking up a Strad and trying to play a concerto...and having the result be considered one of the best of all time!

This is universally considered one of the great films. I've never seen a father-son relationship on film that comes close. By the way, the people on the screen are not professional actors. I don't know how many times I've seen this film, and it is always fresh and vibrant.
