"The Red and the Black" (Stendhal), still one of my favorite books, and not a film, to my knowledge. Has there ever been a better hero?
"Crime and Punishment." Saw an unsatisfying film version long ago. I cannot understand why someone has not attempted this recently.
Well, now I'm thinking of "Troy," and...

Follow Ups:
First one is a 1954 film with Gérard Philipe and Danielle Darrieux:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047432/
And the second - a wonderful 1969 Russian film with Innokentii Smoktunovsky and Georgi Taratorkin as Raskol'nikov:

It is available on tape, and if you can follow Smoktunovsky's monlogues, it is beautiful.

videos by mail, yet, but I'm going to start soon. Thanks for the tips, I'll order these first (I've long admired DD).
Is the Russian director considered top level?

He is a respected director, I don't think he ever made it into the ranks of the truly great, and of course when the movie came out there was plenty of argument, as the classic always generates. I liked the film, especially the Porfirii role - Smoktunovsky is one of the great actors the USSR produced. He is the narrator in the Tarkovsky's mirror. Be forewarned, I think the tape quality is not great at all, but maybe the one I got is not the same you can get today.BTW - I checked the Amazon used sales, there are two - one at $13, and the other one at $66... go figure...

My God! How long is that it! That I saw this " Le Rouge & le Noir " !
It was very static, I mean more like theater, but still have a good feeling about it. I suppose by today standart it must be outdated.

some of today's finer directors would re-make them.

Do you think there is a market for such a wonderful book. Hum....
