Has anyone out there seen the new Godzilla? Actually it's not new but is the original that was released in Japan. It contains subtitles and no Raymond Burr.
It's is a wonderful commentary on the nuclear age. One commuter says to another "if I can survive Hiroshima I can survive Godzilla". Very creepy and effective film. NOT like the others!! Haunting music too. Track it down!

Follow Ups:
rock group recorded the song entitled Godzilla? - AH.

The American version ended with a question mark.Clearly King Kong survived. The rumor is that the Japanese version has Godzilla winning. I believe the song is by Blue Oyster Cult.

Saw it in Santa Monica. I am a G fan so I cannot offer an unbiased opinion. It was great to see it the original in it's original form.

I missed it when it was in town. Not only does it not have Raymond Burr, but it has an extra 40 minutes cut out of the American version.
Hopefully, it will come out on disc, with subtitles, since it is the movie's 50th aniversary .

the city-destroying fire spitting unstoppable monster is the spectre of nuclear devastation repackaged
Godzilla is a very popular and enduring cultural icon in Japan; hardly surprising given the historical perspective
Godzilla was named after a particularly unattractive filmset assistant who was nicknamed "Gorilla" by the director
The original film is charming; and yes, it's a man in a rubber suit

Written in Katakana phonetics as Gorilla is not a Japanese word
Suspect the assistants name was something like "Kenji" + GO-RI-RA = Gojira
It wasn't just a man in a rubber suit. They used some puppets and even some stop motion in the first film.

Opened my eyes on the whole thing, rubber suite including.
Very entertaining interview by Terry Gross with a man who wrote a book about the Godzilla movies.
