Thanks to gracious Rich Jura I was able to see this film.Apparently - and for no clear reason - it is incredibly hard to find, with no copies available from the Amazon or other sources, so if you get your hands on it - keep it!
To be short - this is a better one of the many survivor movies. I am usually quite cool to that genre, but there is something in this film that makes it tick. It is not acting, and probably not even the plot, but most likely it is the atmosphere. It wouldn't be going too far by suggesting that there is certain sense of continuity with the ever-wonderful Passion in the Desert... albeit on the more factual level, with only subtle artistic interplays.
And don't get it confused with the Flight of the Phoenix - this is far more REAL thing... wihin the limitation of the genre, of course.
Quite recommended.

Glad you liked it.George Peppard was supposed to play Stuart Whitmans part, but after a few days in the 'Bush'he packed up and left. The story is they called Whitman who learned all his lines in 48 hours, many think it is his best role.Notice also that when he shoots
his rifle there is actual recoil. If I'm not mistaken I believe they
are Weatherbys.
I don't know how George would be able to play the mean streak in the hero... he is such a sweet guy. Whitman is indeed good, and as I said, I was pleasantly surprised, as generally I treat that genre as a time filler... this one is a good film.BTW - we don't know that happened to the pilot - I presume nothing good, and it was great to let his line and the doctor's just ride into sunset.
I think you are right about the rifle, the ammo certainly looked that way, and the rifle was big enough. I hope they didn't make the actor experience the REAL recoil of the beat, though!
